What we work with.

OnSpeed is open-source firmware on a panel-mount box. It runs alongside the EFIS, audio panel, AOA-equipped pitot, and other gear already in your panel. Here is what it talks to, what it sits next to, and which related projects we work on.

01 — EFIS

Glass panel integration.

OnSpeed reads serial data from each EFIS and overlays its own AOA tone over the audio panel. It runs fully standalone too — no EFIS required.

SkyView and HDX. Serial AHRS, AOA, and EMS feed.

G3X and G3X Touch. Serial output over RS-232.

iEFIS series. Native serial protocol.

Sport, Horizon, and HXr.

VN-300 INS for high-end builds.

02 — Audio panel

Audio panels and intercoms.

Line-level audio out, mono or stereo. Connects to any unswitched aux input. Tested with the panels below; should work with any panel that has an unswitched input.

PMA450 and PMA8000 series.

GMA 240, 245, 350 series.

Standalone intercoms with aux audio in.

03 — Heated pitot

Heated pitot probes.

We don't sell one. Both options below work with OnSpeed. If you fly in IMC or visible moisture, you need a heated probe.

AOA-equipped heated pitot. Most common in RV builds.

Heated AOA-equipped pitot. Strong reputation in higher-performance experimentals.

04 — Related projects

Open-source aviation projects we work with.

TronView

A heads-up display for experimental aircraft. Raspberry Pi 5, XREAL Air 2 Pro AR glasses, Python software. Reads OnSpeed AOA and EFIS data, projects pattern, energy, and stall margin onto the glasses. Led by Cecil "Tron" Jones from our team.

M5Stack

The Gen3 indexer is built on M5Stack's ESP32 platform. Off-the-shelf hardware, our firmware. Cheap, repairable, and easy to source if you ever need a spare.

TLAR

Jeff Brown's iPhone performance and turn-back app. Reads POH numbers, computes when a turnback is possible, then guides the maneuver in flight. Vac and Jeff worked together on the Emergency Mode for power-loss-on-takeoff scenarios. The in-flight cue is the kind of decision support OnSpeed hands the pilot in audio.

MakerPlane

Open-source aviation community. They host a directory of open hardware projects and have featured FlyONSPEED since the early days.

05 — Community

Community and education.

Where pilots and CFIs already are. We work with these orgs through seminars, training events, and forum threads.

EAA Founder's Innovation Prize 2018; Grand Champion 2021. Annual presentations at AirVenture Pilot Proficiency Center.

National Association of Flight Instructors. MentorLIVE seminar #91 — "Teaching AOA Basics" with Vac (April 2025), FAA WINGS credit available.

Engine Loss on Takeoff and AOA Indicator Systems seminar series.

The forum where most of our community lives. Active threads on installs, EFIS integration, calibration questions.

Got a partner we should add?

Send a note. We're especially interested in EFIS or audio-panel integrations we haven't tested, heated pitot sources, and open-source aviation projects we should know about.
